【Ba Pro】Volunteer Activity in Koroipita

前回に引き続き、今回もBa Pro生からブログをお届けします！
今回はYear11のYUKIが、先日行った課外活動について報告してくれました。

YUKIはその活動の中で英語でのアンケート調査にも挑戦をしました。
アンケートに協力してくださった人や今回の調査に関わってくれた
フィジーの人たちにも読んでもらえるようにと、英語と日本語両方でブログを書いてくれました！
このブログがたくさんの人に届くことを祈っています！

Today, I would like to share about the extracurricular activity that I participated in last week!
It was the second week of Term 2 when I decided to do something different.

Ba Proのyear11のYukiです。
今回は私から課外活動について紹介をします！
Term2が始まり約二週間が経ちました。

I was interested in volunteering since before entering Ba Provincial Free Bird Institute (Abbreviated as Ba Pro below) last May.
After entering Ba Pro, I heard that seniors were volunteering and also making their own appointments.
After I heard that, I wanted to challenge myself getting ideas of volunteering activities at the stage of planning into the action.
So I planned to do volunteering activity in KOROIPITA Village.

私は去年の5月にBa Proに入学する前からボランティアに興味を持っていました。
入学してから、先輩が自分でアポイントをとってボランティアをしているという
話を聞き、今年は私もボランティア活動を発案の段階から挑戦したいと思っていました。
そこで今回コロイピタという村でボランティア活動をすることを企画しました。

On Saturday 12th May, the volunteering activity has done with 25 students.

先日の土曜日、5/12に約25名の生徒達と実際にボランティア活動を行ってきた内容を紹介します！

First, let me introduce KOROIPITA Village and then my experiences on that day.
KOROIPITA Village is a village for salvation where people can stay for 1 dollar per day.
In the village, Mr. Peter who established this village, provides assistance and support from New Zealand.

コロイピタとは1日1ドルで暮らすことができる貧困者救済のための村です。
ピーターさんという方が長年かけて作った人口の村で、ニュージーランドからの支援を受けています。

The picture above shows some of houses in the village.
They are very beautiful and convenient! !
According to Mr. Peter, frameworks of these houses are very strong and sturdy,
Although a Cyclone hit Fiji in April this year, there seemed to be no big damage.

その気になる家ですが…とても綺麗なんです！！
ピーターさんに話を聞いたところによると家の造り（骨組み）がとても頑丈になっていて、
今年4月にサイクロンがフィジーを襲いましたがその時も大きな外傷は無かったそうです。

When we arrived at the village, Mr. Peter took us around for a tour.

村に着くと、ピーターさんが村を案内してくれました。

After that, we were divided into several groups and we participated in activities like coloring the desk,
laying the foundation of a new building and conducting a survey on people in the village.

その後、数人に分かれて机の色塗り、新しく建てる建物の土台作りや
村の人たちにアンケート調査を行いました。

I participated in conducting a survey and coloring of the desks, and I was surprised that the village was
wider than expected! People in the village are very kind and when we were carrying out the survey,
they gave us guavas, biscuits, juice and so on. It was fun enough to forget that I was conducting a survey.
I was able to hear various stories!
Also, ones who were asked to answer the survey answered pleasantly and I felt the heart of Fiji’s hospitality deeply,
like Japanese “OMOTENASHI”

私は机の色塗りとアンケート調査を行いましたが、コロイピタという村は予想以上に広くて驚きました！
村のひとはとてもやさしく、アンケートをしているときにグァバやビスケット、ジュースなどを振る舞ってくれました。
自分がアンケート調査中という事を忘れるくらい楽しく色んなお話を聞くことができました！
また、アンケートをお願いした人全員が快く答えてくれるなど改めてフィジーのおもてなしの心をとても感じました。

In the case of the olympic invitation to Japan in
2013, the word “OMOTENASHI” was a keyword.
I think Fijian and Japanese people have similar heart of hospitality.
Also, when I asked
” What makes you feel happy?”
they said
“When i wake up in the mornning “
“Family time”
I was surprised at these answers and at the same time,
I reaffirm that what we think is standard and usual as a matter of course is blessed and fortunate.

日本でもオリンピック招致の際に、おもてなしという言葉がキーワードになっていましたが、
フィジーと日本の人たちでは根底の考え方が似ている部分があるのではと感じました。
また、「あなたが幸せを感じる時はいつですか？」という
質問に対して　「朝、目が覚めた時」や「帰る家がある今この瞬間」「家族と過ごす時間」という答えに
少し驚きつつも改めて私たちが当たり前だと思っている環境はとても恵まれていると感じました。

One of the families I met, a 70 years old mother and her daughter, were living together.
Even though they looked for a house in rent in Suva and Nadi, ther are no places such as KOROIPITA.
She finally found KOROIPITA and they came to Lautoka.
At the end of our conversation, she said “Thank you for listening to my story. I was really glad to meet you.”

私が調査を行った中の一軒に、70歳のおばあさんと43歳の娘さんの2人暮らしの家がありました。
話を聞くとおばあさん達は身寄りがなくSuvaやNadiでは住む場所が見つからずLautokaに来てようやくコロイピタを見つけたそうです。
おばあさんは話し終えると「話を聞いてくれてありがとう。あなたに会えて本当に良かった」　と言ってくれました。
話を聞いていると思わず泣きそうになりました。

Whoever I talked in KOROIPITA they shared their hardships in life.
And everyone said, “Thank you for listening to my story”.
Even though they were doing me a favor by answering my questionnaire survey, they said thanks to me.
That was a new experience for me. I was impressed with her comments.
I am grateful to Mr. Peter and his staff for giving us this opportunity.
In the end, I felt that the residents need someone who can listen to their feelings and situations.
Through this survey, I found communication is very important to learn and understand their lifestyles.
Sometimes “communication” is one of the best solutions to help people.

他の方と話をしても皆さん最後には「話を聞いてくれてありがとう」と言ってくれました。
私はアンケート調査をしてお礼を言われたのは初めてでした。
彼ら、彼女らにはもちろんお金は必要だと思います。
ですが、今回のアンケート調査でそれ以上に「コミュニケーション」をとることの大切さを学びました。
時には「ボランティア」なんて堅苦しいものよりも「コミュニケーション」のほうが
彼ら、彼女らが本当に求めているものなのかもしれません…
次回からの活動には今回集めたアンケートの結果を活用してより一層深みのある活動にしていきたいと思います！

Yuki
